Goods Gallery : Re-Use of Space and Structure

The Goods Gallery is a true public-private partnership: it creates a temporary mobile structure in public space, activated with the community's art and cultural events.

The Goods Gallery is now open for public use, starting December 13th 2008, through January 31st 2009. There is no rental fee and anyone can apply. The gallery includes two dedicated portable restrooms and generator for electricity. The adjoining parking lot is available for free on Saturdays.

It is composed of three adjoining cargo shipping containers connected in a U-shape. The interiors of the containers have been converted into gallery space with approximately 150 linear feet of wall space (800 ft2 gallery space). The three containers surround an open courtyard (800 ft2), perfect for receptions or presentations, and the surrounding space can also be utilized for outdoor activities.

The gallery was created by Smolarcorp in conjunction with ISM: a community project, inc. Its construction was sponsored in part by the Port of Long Beach, the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency, Downtown Long Beach Associates, MHP Engineers, Donelon Construction, Ports America, OOCL, Matson and Hyundai.
